To ignite their
entrepreneurial spirit, 82 students from 8 YMCA Student Care Centres (SCC) sold their handmade crafts to the public at the Sengkang South Little
Entrepreneurs & Family Carnival 2017 on Saturday, 3 June 2017. Mr Gan Thiam
Poh, Member of Parliament graced the event as Guest-of-Honour.
Throughout the
semester, the students unleashed their inner artists to create art pieces by
using recycled materials. To generate sales, they have also developed
unique marketing strategies to engage the residents and members of the public
at the event. Each YMCA Student Care Centre put up
unique items for sale, which
included artificial terrariums, dreamcatchers, tissue holders and rainbow loom
bracelets.
“We plant the seeds
of social entrepreneurship among our young with an aim to instil in them a
belief that they can create positive change. By giving them opportunities to
get involved and supporting them, we are teaching them they have what it takes
to “be the change,” said Ms Lynette Yeo,
Assistant General Secretary (Social Enterprises), YMCA of Singapore.
Through the event,
the students will learn about teamwork and the value of cultivating a social
entrepreneurial mind-set from a non-financial point of view and early informal
training into the world of business. At the same time, they will learn the
importance of helping others and giving back to the community. Proceeds from
the event went towards the less privileged students from the 8 schools.
