This morning, we may have no trouble getting
out of bed, dressing ourselves comfortably and tucking into a hearty breakfast
before cruising off to the office. But a typical day does not begin in quite
the same way for everyone in Singapore.
There are those who suffer the irreversible
plight of not being able to move freely on their own ability, and may have to
depend on a caregiver for a simple act of buttoning their shirt or feeding
themselves. These persons with special needs face a mountain of a challenge in
living as equal members of our community as a result of their physical,
intellectual or developmental impairments.
With this in mind, YMCA of Singapore organises
the YMCA Community Service Programmes with an aim to bring cheer and enrich the
lives of the less privileged so that they too can live wholesome and dignified
lives, and enjoy activities and other simple pleasures of life which most of us
usually take for granted.
The YMCA Giving Gala, held for the 6th time
since 2012, raised over $300,000 for the YMCA Community Service Programmes this
year. Proceeds from the event will help to meet the expenses of running Y Camp
Challenge, Y Arts Challenge, Y Food of Love, Y Dance Outreach and Y Outing. Mrs
Josephine Teo, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office & Second Minister for
Manpower & Second Minister for Home Affairs, graced the event as the
guest-of-honour on 26 October 2017 at Orchard Parade Hotel.
Guests
supported the event by purchasing tables, individual seats, raffle tickets and making
pledges. Many individuals and organisations also contributed prizes for the
raffle draw.
